Last year, a combination of reservations about leaving our van behind in scary "mainland Mexico" and an urgent pressure to make it all the way to Central America prevented us from making the journey. - This year, with the confidence of familiarity and the leisure of time on our side, we stored our van in the beautiful town of El Fuerte and boarded one of Mexico's only passenger trains en route to the tiny indigenous town of Creel, deep in the Chihuahuan mountains. We recruited Braden's brother, Logan, to come along for the ride. - The ride was spectacular. In true Mexican fashion, we enjoyed beers and tequila along the way and enjoyed the views from between the train cars, poking our heads out to get better views as the porters and security looked the other way. - The railway skirted along the cliff edges and deep River valleys that make up the vast network known as the Barrancas Del Cobre (Copper Canyon). The network is longer and deeper than Arizona's Grand Canyon, and shares the beauty of Grand Canyon's North Rim. Cactus gave way to pines and cedars as we climbed from 400 meters to 2400 meters; the train switch backing up the steep inclines. - Unlike the Grand Canyon in which very few people live, Barrancas Del Cobre is populated with large numbers of indigenous communities living deep in the canyon or clinging to the cliff edges. In the small towns and at every stop along the way where they sell their wares to tourists and locals alike, their colourful clothing flashes against the yellow and greens of the landscape. - The ride was a dream come true, and our stay in Creel was full of exploration, adventure, and of course, sampling the local food. Now, we have a new dream: to take the van, with it's new frame and beefy tires, along the dirt roads that dice into the canyon, where we can camp and explore outside the constraints of a train schedule. We find ourselves in rural towns, chatting with locals, enjoying culture, food, & scenery at a leisurely pace. Mexico has some bad back roads, but we've conquered many of them with ease, until now. - On our way from Caborca to the coast Braden & I decided to take a back road which, on the map, looked much like many we had seen before. Dotted with a few small towns, it promised to cut 40kms off our drive. The decision was a no brainer. - What started as a roughly paved road soon deteriorated into dirt & then sand; deep sand. We passed by the first village & locals stared after us in amazement. It would be the last time we saw any signs of life for 3 days. By the time we made it to where the 2nd village should have been, we had crossed many deep, sandy washes through which we knew we wouldn't be able to go back. We were forced onward. - Hours were spent scouting the road & desert for solid ground. On 2 occasions we conceded to the road & opted to set up camp for the night instead of getting stuck as dark fell. On day 2, we saw a building & hoped to find help. Instead, we found graffiti & bullet holes. Stories of Sonoran narcos, robberies & murders echoed in our heads. Out here no one would hear our screams. - On day 3, I woke up crying, certain that our luck would dry up & that we would have to abandon the van & walk to safety. We tried digging to see how far down the hard ground was. We never found it. On this stretch we found an abandoned vehicle, salvaged & pocked by bullets. I was preparing myself to walk the remaining 18kms, but not before a final attempt. Braden backed the van up so he could get a running start. I held my breath as Braden projected the van over the wash. The rear wheels spun, grasping for traction as momentum propelled him forward. Seconds slowed to eternity. Despite all odds the van finally hit terra firma & we shrieked with excitement. - When we finally arrived in Puerto Lobos our nerves had turned to mush & our hair was full of sand. We asked a local about driving to Caborca on the road we had just crossed. She has taken us nearly everywhere we've wanted to go, she's never given us engine troubles, & she continues to keep us safe, warm, dry, & comfortable. She was born and raised in Ontario, though, and that means that the winters were very hard on her, like on most vehicles that have to deal with wet, slushy, salty roads. Despite our own best efforts, we could not keep the rust from eating away at her exposed frame or corroding parts of her body panel. It was time, after all she's done for us, to give something back in return. Before our train trip on El Chepe, we met a man who owned an auto body shop in Alamos. He lifted the van & took a look. "This could take many days, it will be a lot of work," he told us, assessing the situation. With a dire look on his face, he told us that with parts & labour, the job would cost $6000 pesos. Braden & I looked at each other. Did we hear that right? I did a quick conversion on my phone. This man, Octavio, had just told us that he would cut out our rust, weld in new metal on the body & the frame, & repaint for $400 Canadian dollars. We immediately accepted his estimate & told him we'd be back in a week & a half. Fast forward to that time, Braden & I spent our days hiking into the mountains, or walking around beautiful Alamos, or playing with Octavio's lovely perros. Each time we returned to the shop, the van looked more and more like her original self. We had difficulties communicating our specific concerns, & at times were very nervous that things wouldn't work out the way we hoped they would. But Octavio was patient, & addressed our concerns in simple Spanish & in basic illustrations. After four days, the rocker panels looked brand new & were covered in a rugged coat of gravel guard. The frame underneath looked strong, reinforced with sturdy metal, and was cut to allow any water, salt, or mud that got in to drain out (an inherent flaw in most GMC or Chevy chassis). Now, we know we can continue to drive confidently over Mexico's rough terrain without causing the frame to flex or strain. We are so happy to have given our MVP a new lease on life & are certain that the work we had done will last for years to come. Will the Van's capacity for adventure outlast our own? Gathering information about the passes for weeks, reports from others who had just made the trek were mixed. We watched hopefully as the snow on the towering mountains around the valley receded with each day's sun. We were feeling confident. A new friend offered us his spare set of snow chains & the reassurance of a convoy. Our spirits were high. This was our chance. - We left on a beautiful day. The sun was shining, the sky was a clear blue. Both of us & our new friend James with the chains lamented having to leave this paradise. But James had pressing real world deadlines to meet & we figured it was about time to resume our press towards Mexico. The snow covered peaks were on our left side now. For many miles we drove north in this lonely & dry land. We slowly began to climb towards the high mountain pass & little bits of snow began appearing in the shadows of trees. Then, like a demarcation line, there was snow. A lot of snow. - We made it a good distance driving on snow & ice that had been packed solid by weeks of steady traffic, but once the road steepened we decided to put James' chains on our balding rear wheels. Better to do it now than potentially sliding off the road ahead. The chains bit into the snow & ice with ravenous hunger, making the ascent up several steep, icy sections a veritable cake walk. - Rumbling up another steep and windy section I marveled to myself: with snow chains on, & a confident grip on the road, I was actually having fun. Coming in the South Pass three weeks earlier was a distant nightmare. - Finally, James and his jacked-up Ford van with huge chunky tires appeared in the rear view mirrors. He whooped & hollered, giving us exaggerated thumbs-ups, surely relieved that he wouldn't be stuck filling his obligation to pull us out of trouble. - A wise man who has been coming to the valley for years told us "I learn something new every time I come into the valley. After hearing the story of you guys getting in here I think you have learned something this time, too."
